GABRIELLE ‘COCO’ CHANEL

Coco Chanel is an extremely memorable fashion designer and a very important figure in 20th century fashion. She started her career by making straw hats. Although her creations were questionable at first they soon became very fashionable for the women of her time. She then expanded on to couture and by the 1920s Maison de Chanel Paris had grown considerably. Her idea of fashion was to be the trend setter rather than to be the one to conform to the uncomfortable women’s fashions of this time period. It was very popular for women to wear the corsetted dress and clothing that simply didn’t support the natural habit of breathing. Coco faught against this trend and came up with a style we now refer to as the “little boy” look. Chanel herself dressed in mannish clothing and soon after her friends and the women in her community were supporting her designs. Her influence on haute couture was unlike anyone else. This incredible women and extremely talented fashion designer is the epitome of poise and class and even though she preferred wearing trousers to a corset she had her own elegance that only one could dream of.

Last November, I was offered an amazing opportunity. I was hired to work backstage at the Chanel runway show here in Toronto. The clothes were flown in from Paris as well as part of the Chanel Paris staff. It was one of the best evenings of my life.

I am utterly infatuated by Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel. Perhaps one day I’ll be standing in a similar pair of shoes and I don’t just mean a peep toe pump in python. Dream big or don’t bother dreaming at all.
